Toronto News

Things seem to be getting back to some type or normalcy (?!?). Having Christmas and New Year’s Day in the middle of the week really messes things up. But at least they are still on the actual day, unlike so many others that have been changed to a Monday to make for a three day weekend.

Most people nowdays have their cell phone that they use as an alarm clock. Some still have clock radios, battery powered alarm clocks, wind up alarm clocks or their parents or spouse wake them. But how did people know that it was time to get up before all this technology?

We offer our sympathy to the families of Goldie Sissom, J.E. Kimbell, Jim Beitz, and Joe Tatum, Sr. We offer our sympathy to all others who lost family members this past week. May they all rest in peace.

Hello! To all in area nursing and assisted living facilities, hello also to all in area hospitals and rehab centers.

The weather, so far, has definitely been winter like, with all the snow and ice. I think one of the prettiest sights is when everything is coated in a thin layer of ice and it sparkles in the sun. Although it can be as deadly as it is pretty.

The last snowfall dropped quite a bit of snow. I don’t know what the official measurement was but after our neighbor Chad Altis scraped our drive, the snow was about 3-4” deep at the point where he dropped his bucket and started scraping back towards the street.

I ventured out onto the ramp, scraped a little snow off the top then scooped down about 2” and got some snow for snow ice cream and there was still 1-2” below. This last snow had me wishing I was younger. It seemed to be perfect for sledding and the most fun place I can think of to sled is down the back side of the dam.

I don’t know if they allow that anymore, but through the years we used to go down there below the dam on the east side, then climb up the hill to the highway and slide down on inner tubes. It was lots of fun, but boy you got a workout climbing back up to the top.

Answer: During the Industrial Revolution in countries like Britain, Ireland and the Netherlands, many had to get up before sun up to go work in factories so there were people called “knocker- ups or knocker-uppers” who were hired to go to the doors of the workers and knock on the doors with a stick or a cane and was usually pregnant women or elderly men!

And to think, kids today think we are really old because we had a wind up alarm or clock radio with the numbers that were on a rod that rotated and flipped down to revel the exact time! And noisy! Especially if you were a light sleeper.

There was another fire in town. This time it got the garage at the place where Claude and Marge Burr lived for years. No one was injured and the Toronto Volunteer Fire Department got the fire put out without damage to surrounding buildings.

The old Kenny and Mary Sowder place burned down Christmas morning and now this garage. We hope there are no more structure fires in town. The displacement of one family is enough. Please be careful when using extension cords, space heaters and heat lamps. A fire to end one year and start a new year is not the way to go.

The Toronto Senior Center recently held their Annual Meeting and Election of Board of Directors: Rick Tyner, President; Gary Snider, Vice President; Donna Scholes, secretary; Vicky Altis, treasurer; and Angie Sherman, Cora Tyner and Mark Sherman as board members.

The Center is open Monday - Friday 9-11 a.m. Everyone is welcome to attend.
