Toronto News

The first weekend of this new year sure was a doozy. Freezing rain, ice, slip and fall, sleet, thunder snow and more snow. And, cold, cold weather. To top off all of that, a power outage occurred in the area Sunday morning. I know it is that time of year but, is this a sign of things to come?

And yes, you read that right ‘slip and fall.’ I went outside Saturday morning, talking to a friend in the driveway and never even thought about the ramp being slick until my feet went out from underneath me and I was lying on the ramp cold and wet. Good thing there was a handrail there to pull myself up.

Nothing broke, but muscles I didn’t know I had were sure letting me know that I messed up. I got a fall out of the way early this year, now it will be smooth sailing?!

What does “pneumonoul-tramicroscopicsilicovolcanoco-niosis” mean?

We saw two eagles sitting in a tree when we were headed to Yates Center the other day. That makes three I’ve seen so far this winter.

We offer our sympathy to the families of Donna Engstrom and Elizabeth “Betty” Sanders. We offer our sympathy to all others who lost loved ones this past week. May they all rest in peace.

Hello to all in area nursing and assisted living facilities. Hello also to all in area hospitals and rehab centers.

As is usual with ice storms, tree limbs break off and leave a mess in one’s yard. Having not been out and about yet since the storm, I have no idea what it looks like around town. I see limbs down in our yard though.

The crows have sure been noisy lately and it seems like there are more of them each time they land in one of the open spaces around our place. A murder or congress of crows can get really loud.

Answer: Lung disease caused by inhaling fine silicate or quartz dust. When I was reading this trivia question, in an old email it gave four choices: Dinosaur, Tree, Rare gemstone or Lung disease. Pretty simple guess for me as those first eight letters always has to do with lungs.

While looking for a quote to end this column, I came across this quote that had me laughing. I have nothing against French people but I thought this was hilarious: “Never doubt the courage of the French. They were the ones who discovered that snails are edible.” - Doug Larson I don’t know if it is true that they are the ones who discovered this, but I haven’t the courage to try any. I suppose it takes a certain type of snail not the ones we see slowly crawling through our yards and gardens. Have you ever tried escargot?

With winter being here, I hope everyone is properly prepared. One important thing to do is to keep your gas tank full, keep an ice scraper in your vehicle and carry a bag of kitty litter. If you get stuck you can pour some on the ground in front of and behind your tires to help you get traction.

Keep your cell phone charged and with you so you can call for help. Keep extra coats and blankets in your vehicle in case of an emergency. My philosophy is: If you hear on the radio or tv that the roads are slick and you need to stay off the roads, then stay off the roads. Stay inside where you’re safe and warm.
