JH Tornado Basketball Battled Yellowjackets And Cubs

Eureka’s Junior High basketball teams traveled to both Fredonia and Humboldt last week for basketball action.

Against Fredonia

On Monday, Dec. 16, the Tornadoes went 1-3 at Fredonia, with the lone victory going to the A-team boys.

The boys trailed 11-12 after the first and held with the Yellowjackets in the second with both scoring 8. Eureka took charge in the third quarter, outscoring the Yellowjackets 20-15. Although the Tornadoes were outscored 5-7 in the fourth, Eureka held on and won the game 4442. Scoring for the Tornadoes were Tate Scott 13, Eli Mason 8, Cash Escareno and Wacey Ross each with 7, JaKolby Robbins 6 and Maddox Hughes 3.

The Tornado B-team boys lost 15-17. Scoring for Eureka were Cord Adkins 7, Asher Euler 3 and Gavin Gonzales 2.

The Lady Tornadoes A-team claimed an early 4-2 lead in the first but slowly let it fade and lost the game 12-20. Scoring for Eureka were Bella Damon 6, Annabelle Bogle 4 and Wenonah Welsh 2.

In Lady Tornado B-team action, Eureka was only able to get one basket to fall in just three of the four quarters and fell 6-11. Scoring for Eureka were Naomi Jordaan, Anddee Weatherby and Brielle Thompson on with 2.

Against Humboldt

The Tornadoes traveled to Humboldt on Thursday, Dec. 19, where Eureka went 2-3 for the night, with the Tornado boys A and C-teams claiming wins.

Eureka’s A-team Ladies trailed by one at each and every quarter break, 3-4, 11-12, 16-17 and 22-23. Scoring for Eureka were Damron 8, Bogle 7, Welsh 4, Amorette Guillaume 2 and Abbi Foth 1.

In B-team Lady Tornado action, Eureka lead 6-4 after the first but, trailed 10-12 at halftime. Eureka was unable to overcome the small deficit falling by two, 20-22. Scoring for Eureka were Welsh 5, Andee Weatherby 4, Reagan Ashlock 3 and Kaylee Palmer, Kinsley Cox, Alivia Hare and Brielle Thompson all with 2.

The Tornado A-team boys game went back and forth throughout the game in a nail-biter to the final quarter. Eureka led 5-4 after the first and were tied at 12 at halftime. The Tornadoes claimed a 1-point advantage in the third to lead 18-17 going into the final stanza. Eureka pulled away and claimed a 31-23 win over the Cubs to move to 5-1 for the season. Scoring for Eureka were Scott and Ross each with 10, Mason 6, Robbins 3 and Christian Sanchez 2.

Eureka’s B-team struggled to find a rhythm, shooting single digits in all four quarters. The Tornadoes trailed 4-14 after the first and were down 7-27 at halftime. With one quarter remaining, Eureka trailed 8-36. The Tornadoes lost the game, 36-41. Scoring for Eureka were Ryan Miles 7, Dylan Conard 6 and Liam Mead 2.

In C-team action, the Tornado boys trailed 4-6 after the first but took the lead in the second and never looked back. Eureka led 14-12 at half and increased their lead to 22-14 in the third. Eureka got the lone score in the fourth to win the game, 24-14. Scoring for Eureka were Gavin Gonzales 13, Donovan Owings 7 and Brandon Cornett and Donald Baker each with 2.
