The Eureka junior high basketball teams kicked off their seasons last week with two regular season outings and a pre-season tournament.
Against Neodesha
Eureka hosted their first games of the season, facing the Bluestreaks of Neodesha on Monday, Dec. 9. The Tornadoes went 2-3 for the evening with the Boys A and B teams claiming victories.
The Lady Tornadoes A-team struggled, only getting two baskets to fall in the first quarter. They trailed the Bluestreaks 4-14 after the first. The second quarter found the Tornadoes farther behind as they were unable to count a basket and trailed 4-24 at halftime. Eureka trailed 6-38 after three and lost the game, 10-43. Scoring for Eureka were Andee Weatherby and Annabelle Bogle each with 4 and Celona Hall 2.
Eureka’s B-team Ladies claimed the first two quarters against the Bluestreaks but it wasn’t enough to claim the victory. The Lady Tornadoes led 10-5 at halftime but allowed 23 points in the second and fell 19-28. Scoring for Eureka were Kaylee Palmer, Alivia Hare and Bella Damron with 4 each, Kinsley Cox, Reagen Ashlock and Weatherby all with 2 and Amorette Guillaume with 1.
The Tornadoes A-team boys claimed the edge over Neodesha with a 35-30 victory. Scoring for the Tornadoes were Cash Escareno and Tate Scott each with 9, Wacey Ross 7, JaKolby Robbins 6 and Eli Mason 4. Eureka B-team boys also claimed the victory, 22-15. Scoring for Eureka were Cord Adkins 6, Liam Mead 4, Felix Neil 3 and Dylan Conard, Gavin Gonzales, Ryan Miles, Asher Euler amd Henry Perrier all with 2. The Tornadoes C-team fell to Neodesha, 7-22. Scoring for Eureka were Mead 4, Donavan Owings 2 and Brandon Cornett 1.
Against Bluestem
On Thursday evening, Dec. 12, the junior high basketball team hosted the Lions of Bluestem, where the Tornado A-teams recording victories.
Moving to 2-0 on the season, the A-team boys dominated the Lions in a 47-13 victory. Eureka made 20-58 field gals and 5 of 13 from the line. Scoring for the Tornadoes were Scott 12, Robbins 10, Ross 6, Perrier 5, Mason 4, Conard 3, Escareno, Maddox Hughes and Christian Sanchez all with 2 and Adkins with 1.
Eureka’s B-team played two quarters against the Lions, falling 7-8. Scoring for the Tornadoes were Adkins 5 and Mead 2.
The Lady Tornadoes A-team jumped out to an early start, leading 8-0 after the first and 9-2 at the half. Eureka was outscored 4-7 in the third but came back in the fourth and final quarter, 8-5 to win the game 21-14. Scoring for Eureka were McKenna Mc-Donald 10, Damron 6, Hall and Bogle each with 2 and Hare 1.
Eureka’s B-team girls struggled in the first half, trailing 0-12 at the intermission. Despite having their best quarter in the third, scoring 6, the Tornadoes fell 8-18. Scoring for the Lady Tornadoes were Palmer, Cox, Naomi Jordaan and Damron all with 2.
JH Tournament At Olpe
The Eureka Tornado boys and girls teams competed at the Olpe tournament on Saturday, Dec. 14. The Lady Tornadoes went 0-2 to place fourth and the boys went 1-1 to claim third.
Eureka’s Lady Tornadoes fell 3-51 to the Eagles of Olpe. Scoring for Eureka were Wenonah Brenckman and Damron 1. The Ladies fell to Douglass 1338. Individual scorers were unavailable at the time of publication.
The boys fell to Olpe 1461 in the first game. Eureka struggled in the first only getting one basket to fall and the Eagles tallied 23 points. The Tornadoes would score 6 points in the next two quarters and go scoreless in the final stanza. Scoring for the boys were Scott, Ross and Mason all with 4 and Escareno 2. Eureka then faced Yates Center for a third place match up. The Tornadoes dominated the first quarter, 22-10 and continued to increase their lead in the second, leading 29-13 at halftime. Both teams scored 10 in the third quarter. Eureka outscored the Wildcats in the fourth, 9-7 to secure the third place finish, 46-32. Scoring for Eureka were Mason 14, Ross 10, Scott 9, Escareno and Sanchez each with 4 and Conard and Robbins each with 2.

The Tornadoes were scheduled to travel to Fredonia on Monday of this week before traveling to Humboldt this Thursday, Dec. 19.
