ERC To Update Policy / Staff Handbooks

The Eureka Recreation Commission (ERC) held its final meeting of 2024 last Tuesday, Nov. 26, where they discussed routine business, including updating handbooks.

Discussion about updating the handbooks came while discussing various responsibilities with summer pool staff. Because several things were not completed, the board felt the responsibilities and staff handbooks should be updated and referenced in the future. Later in the conversation, ERC member Jordan Ring shared a concern with Director Derek Larcom regarding the recent wood bat league. Ring noted that he had several individuals express concerns regarding the absence of the director. Prior to the league forming, the ERC discussed the league in-depth. At that time it was noted Director Larcom would not be at the individual games, but would prep the field before the weekly events. Larcom referenced the prior conversations and further noted that the league was held during football season, which is where his focus was. The board concluded that they wanted to update all files, including responsibilities they have with various locations that they share with other entities (i.e., Eureka Aquatic Park, Lion’s Park). ERC member Brandon Hall plans to work on this project.

In other business, the board approved to donate a Season Pass to Eureka Aquatic Park for the silent auction during the Memorial Hall 100th Anniversary Celebration.

Discussion was also held regarding the upcoming basketball season, which was slated to begin the first part of December with games starting in January. There are four 1st-2nd grade co-ed teams, three 3rd-4th grade boys, three 3rd-4th grade girls teams and one boys and girls team for 5th-6th grade. The 5th-6th grade teams will travel to Burlington for games.

The ERC received two bids for moving the fence at the City Park softball diamond. The first totaled $12,000 and the second was for $17,000. Due to the costs, the ERC plans to gather additional bids or forgo the project.

Discussion was then held regarding the landscape project at the Eureka Aquatic Park. A bid had been received; but, was taken to the City of Eureka to present to the council. It was noted that the bid included removing all landscape on the east side and filling those areas with concrete and removing the berm on the west side.

The ERC routinely meets on the last Wednesday of the month at the ERC Garage. Due to upcoming holidays, the ERC doesn’t plan to meet in December.
