The Fall River City Council meets monthly on the second Monday of each month. The following report was generated from the official minutes of the Oct. 21 council meeting, which were approved by the council during their Nov. 11 monthly meeting.
Mayor Brendan Coulter opened the meeting at 7 p.m. Council members Dave Vance, Sue York and Jim Cude were present. Council members Norma Jones and Lori McCaffree were absent.
During the street discussion, Treasurer Cathy Ivey reported on behalf of Joe Simon regarding gravel. He has been working on the alley behind the store/post office and potholes around town. Mayor Coulter asked about the pothole near the bank. Previously Simon said he fixed it but it won’t stay. Mayor Coulter commented it probably needs an asphalt patch (hot or cold) and asked John Schouten if anything was available from the county. Schouten planned to check.
Water Manager Schouten reported meter cans are needed as some are caving in and need to be replaced (on hand supply is now depleted). He will provide the details to City Clerk Christy Walta and she will look for suppliers.
The Sept. 9 meeting minutes and treasurer’s reports were approved as presented. Treasurer Ivey noted the general fund is looking better and she planned to look into the Opiod report that is due at the end of the year.
While discussing monthly bills, it was shared that the water bill was higher this month due to the flush done during the prior month. The Myers indicated they were done mowing for the season. The bills were approved as presented.
Treasurer Ivey reported the bill from Green’s for the BBQ has not been received yet. Mayor Coulter asked if the problem with the two dumpsters after the BBQ has been resolved and it has.
Regarding the library, Council member York shared she is starting the Patrick Mahomes program (15 and the Mahomies Foundation) available for kids. It’s a program to encourage kids to read and there are no age limits. Parents are encouraged to read with their kids. She also provided a copy of the Library Board minutes.
Council member D. Vance commented the yellow mop bucket is missing from the Community Building. Council member Cude said he borrowed it and forgot to return it. Mayor Coulter asked if tearing down the chairs and tables after the City Council meetings was necessary. Council member D. Vance indicated it’s better for cleaning.
Regarding Happy Hour, it was shared that the lights need to be fixed. Council member D. Vance planned to bring it to the Senior Citizens group meeting, to see if their donated funds could be used for the needed repairs. It was also noted that there had been two new members sign-up for the Happy Hour Club.
The Halloween party was a great success, with 237 people attending. Council member McCaffree, Ruthie Vance and Crystal Thomas are discussing plans for next year.
Council member York reported that anyone who owns a small dog in town should keep a close eye on them, as her dog was killed by coyotes in town, recently.
The American Water Works Association sent a notice concerning their scholarship program for students interested in a career in water. The information is posted in the City Hall window or interested parties can contact the City Clerk for more details.
The council held a 20-minute executive session with their Attorney Alleen VanBebber for legal matters. No action taken.
The meeting adjourned at 7:41 p.m.
The council will meet for their next monthly meeting on Monday, Dec. 9, at 7 p.m. at the community building in Fall River.
