Members of the community gathered on Monday, Nov. 11 at Veterans Memorial Hall, at 11 a.m.
In honor of the 100 year anniversary of the dedication of the Veterans Memorial Hall in Eureka, the City Of Eureka dedicated the new flag pole.
Although the official plaque hadn’t arrived as of Monday morning, Mayor Stephen Coulter presented a replica to the Veterans in attendance on Monday morning.
Memorial Hall was built in 1924, with hopes of serving as a grand place to house city offices and host events. At the time, the US economy was good and war memorials were popping up across the country.
The building is unique because of its distinguished three-bay front façade with large center bay topped by a large arched parapet that obscures a vaulted roof over the auditorium. The two-story red brick building has a concrete foundation with stone detailing.
In its 100 years, Eureka’s Memorial Hall has hosted many events reflecting decades of life in middle America. Big Bands sat in its orchestra pit. Traveling and Community Theater performed on its stage. Basketball tournaments, indoor baseball and the circus came to town. Dances for senior citizens and teenagers, banquets, flower shows, science fairs and trade shows were hosted.
To date, it remains a vibrant part of the community as the host of several city offices, plus is the home to several different organizations, class reunions, craft shows, weddings, dances, community meals, plus much more.
During his speech, Mayor Coulter shared the symbolism of the American flag. “It is important that we remember all those who have come before us, as well as those who are still with us and the ones who continue to keep us safe and free today.” He continued, “May this flagpole always stand tall. A beacon of hope and be a reminder of the sacrifices made for our country. We dedicate this flagpole to all veterans past, present and future. Thank you Veterans!”
Members of the Eureka Junior/Senior High School choir sang the National Anthem and “My Country Tis of Thee.” Following the special presentation, the VFW Post #2712 held their annual bean feed.
On Dec. 9, the City of Eureka invites citizens to join in celebrating the birthday of this historic structure. The event, from 12 to 6 p.m., will include an open house, refreshments, tours, an art contest display and much more.
A special assembly was also held on Monday morning at Marshall Elementary School. Members of the sixth grade class provided introductory remarks, presented Military flags, sang “On Veterans Day,” recited “H is for Honor” and sang “God Bless the USA.” Members of the sixth grade band played “Grand Ole’ Flag.”
Thank You
We are blessed with a great community who continues to go above and beyond for Eureka. The recent dedication at the Veterans Memorial Wall was made possible by many including: Ramsey Concrete and staff, Evergy staff, Trint Peine and students, City Administrator Joel Laws and staff at the City of Eureka and of course our Veterans.
