The Greenwood County Farm Bureau Association has announced the Jean Edwards family as 20242025 Farm Family of the Year. This award is selected based on Farm Bureau’s mission of “Advocacy, Education and Service.” Jean Edwards is a Hamilton local. She was married to her late husband John Edwards on July 3, 1965, and ranched with him until his passing in 2022. Together, they have two children, daughter Deann Edwards-McCaffree and Son DJ Edwards. Jean has three grandchildren: Chance Bankson, Colby Bankson and Jade Edwards, and a new great-grandchild, Bonnie Bankson.

When Jean was growing up, she was taught things like how to work cattle horseback with her dad, drive a team of horses to pull a dump rake, to drive with an international truck that she fed with in the winter and eventually, drive tractors when they became available.

Currently, Jean is taking care of the farmland where she grew up. They have mainly raised Angus, Beefmasters and Angus crosses. Their bulls are mostly Simmental. She has cows, calves and bulls. She partners with her son on yearling steers and heifers and leases some pasture to her children as well. She currently manages over 4,660 acres, utilizing the help of her children and grandchildren. Jean is involved in many activities in Farm Bureau such as being a board member since 2022, serving as the 2023-2024 Vice-President, attending the Women Managing the Farm conference, helping with local Farm Bureau events such as Day on the Farm, Legislature and Lemonade, the annual meeting and attending the State Farm Bureau meeting to serve as a voting delegate. Outside of Farm Bureau, Jean is active in the Global Methodist church of Madison, Eureka Music club, Madison PEO, Order of Eastern Star, Kansas Livestock Association and Kansas Cattlemen’s Association.
