Northern Lights, a comet that hasn’t passed this way since the Neanderthals walked the earth (88,000 years ago), Sun Dogs and cooler temps; what craziness! Haveyouhadtheopportunity to see the Aurora Borealis? What about the comet? There were numerous Sun dogs spotted recently. I’m sure you have been enjoying the cooler weather.

What is a “Sun Dog?”

Sunday was a hard hat kind of day! If you have any walnut trees in your yard, as we do, with it being Fall and the wind gusting like it was, it was dangerous being out in the yard. When taking Punky and Taco out, I had to be careful where I stood!

I can’t believe how many areintheyardandhowmany are still in the trees. It will be awhile yet, before they all fall. So in the meantime, we

all jump regularly when the walnuts hit the roof or the AC unit. If anyone wants to come gather some walnuts, come on by.

We offer our sympathy to the families of Ted Voth, Vergie McCormick and Jim Frye who passed away recently. We offer our sympathy to all others who lost loved ones this past week. May they all rest in peace.

Answer: Sometimes, when ice crystals are present in the atmosphere, the sunlight is refracted to create the optical effect of “two smaller suns” flanking the Sun. Humans decided hundreds of years ago to call this sight “Sun Dogs,” deriving from the verb “dog” as the action of following someone or something closely.

I do hope everyone has had their furnaces checked for the fall and winter. It’s time to use them again. The weatherman was predicting 39° for an overnight low one day this week.

It’s time to prepare all outdoor stuff for winter. Put away your lawn furniture and yard toys and transplant shrubs and bulbs. Old Man Winter will be here before we know it. So get prepared.
