The Eureka Recreation Commission (ERC) approved an agreement with the Eureka Country Club last Tuesday, September 26, during their routine monthly meeting.

The Eureka Recreation Commission (ERC) approved an agreement with the Eureka Country Club last Tuesday, September 26, during their routine monthly meeting.

ERC member Isaac Boone shared that he had met with theEurekaCountryCluband they would like to move to a flat rate for next summer’s league. In the past, the ERC has paid per golfer and then for a meal and swim party on the last day of the season. This last summer, the ERC paid a total of $1,900. Boone shared with the commission that the ERC was willing to offer a flat rate of $1,000 for all ERC golfers and $1,400 to include the meal. After a short discussion, the ERC approved the rate of $1,400 to cover fees and the meal.

A lengthy discussion was held regarding the upcoming winter basketball seasons. New members Brandon Hall and Isaac Boone would like to see the various leagues stay and compete in Eureka. However, ERC Director Derek Larcom was unsure the numbers would allow for league play. As a group, the consensus was to continue to have fifth and sixth grade teams compete with the Burlington Recreation. Larcom planned to send out letters for those in the younger divisions to check numbers. However, the overall goal is to keep the younger divisions competing in Eureka. The Eureka High School girls basketball coach will continue to offer Little Dribblers for the girls and Larcom will be holding a skills camp for boys and girls in first and second grades. Larcom also shared that Kevin Hough will also be assisting in the skills camp as in past years in late November/early December. It was also suggested that high school students assist with various leagues. Larcom is going to reach out to the football coach to see if any high school football players would like to assist with the ERC football programs.

Regarding Lion’s Park, the ERC President Austin Evenson noted that he would like to discontinue purchasing the trash bags for dog excrement. Larcom shared that a Lion’s Club member takes care of the stations and the ERC has a box of bags. The commission voted 4-1 to continue ordering the bags, but shipping them directly to the Lion’s Club if they are still interested in continuing the service. Evenson voted no.

Tiara Smith shared a donation from Warhorse Petroleum who recently hosted a co-ed softball tournament.

See related article for additional details. During discussion, recommendations were made to purchase batting mats for the batter’s box. The ERC was looking at getting two for each field. No decisions were made.

Larcom stated the recent community service day hosted by Eureka Junior/Senior High School and shared that the art teacher is going to paint a design on the restrooms at Lion’s Park.

The commission approved the transaction report and minutes, as presented.

The ERC meets routinely on the last Wednesday of the month, at 7 p.m., at the ERC garage.
