The Eureka Junior High Tornadoes ended the home portion of their season with a 32-0 victory over the outmanned Galesburg Timberwolves. Eureka scored at will, and some timely plays on defense all contributed to the win.
Eureka opened the game by taking the opening kick down the field methodically, scoring on a touchdown pass from quarterback Tate Scott to receiver Christian Sanchez. The conversion, a pass from Scott to Wacey Ross, was successful and the Tornadoes had an 8-point lead.
Galesburg took their opening possession down the field with some power running but an interception by the Tornado defense ended that threat. Eureka took possession on the Galesburg 40-yard line. A short run by Maddox Hughes was followed by a 58-yard touchdown gallop by Eli Mason. A Scott run completed the conversion and the Tornadoes doubled their lead to 16-0.
Galesburg fumbled on their next possession after moving the ball 19 yards on runs up the middle. Eureka took the ball on Galesburg’s 42-yard line and moved it downfield, capping the drive with an 18yard touchdown scamper by Sanchez. Another Scott run on the conversion made the score 24-0.
The Timberwolves fumbled the kickoff following that score and Eureka put up another touchdown, this time a 12-yard pass from Scott to Mason. The conversion, a pass from Scott to Hughes, made the score 32-0 in favor of the home team. Galesburg turned the ball over once again, this time an interception by Hughes. At this point, with just a few minutes left in the first half, the younger Tornadoes took the ball but were unable to move it.
The second half, which featured a running clock, was played by Eureka’s younger players. Both the Tornadoes and the Timberwolves struggled to move the ball and the game ended with the same score it had at the half. A fifth quarter followed, which allowed the Tornado youngsters to get some valuable playing experience.
Eureka, now 3-2 on the year, will travel to Neodesha Thursday to play the Bluestreaks. Game time has been moved up to 4:30 to accommodate the officials. The Tornadoes will then travel to Cherryvale the following Thursday to complete their season.
