Greenwood County History

Greenwood County Courthouse

In 1956, the Greenwood County Courthouse was torn down and replaced by the building that now stands in Eureka. The question was asked of the writer one time “Where did the citizens of the county go to conduct business with the county during construction of the new courthouse?”

The 1956 Eureka telephone directory listed the county offices as follows: Attorney—217 1/2 N. Main (over the Home National Bank) Bi-County Health Dept.—Crebo Building (Freeman Building, SE corner 3rd & Main) Bindweed Dept.—Freeman Building Blacksmith Shop— County Farm (S. Jefferson Street) County Clerk—106 N. Main Clerk of District Court—105 N. Main County Engineer—106 N. Main County Extension Service— 114 1/2 N. Main Judge of District Court—105 N. Main Oil Assessor 106 N. Main Probate Judge—105 N. Main Register of Deeds—119 W. 3rd Street Sheriff Quarters and Office— 210 N. Oak (Building is no longer there) Superintendent of County Schools-Crebo Building County Treasurer—Crebo Building County Welfare Director— 209 1/2 N. Main
