The Eureka Junior High Tornado football team traveled to Humboldt last Thursday, Sept. 26 to play the Cubs in a Tri-Valley League football game. The Tornadoes played their best ball of the season and beat the hosts 22-16 in an excit - ing contest.
The game was a defensive contest throughout. Eure ka took the opening kickoff and was unable to move the ball. However, after turning it over on downs, they recov- ered a Humboldt fumble at mid-field. Again, they were unable to move the ball and again turned it over on downs. Humboldt did the same, and once again, Eure- ka had the ball and was un - able to move it. Humboldt
finally put a drive together and scored with 40 seconds left in the first half. The conversion was good and Humboldt led 8-0.
Eureka took the ensuing kickoff and suddenly was able to move the ball through the air. In 28 sec - onds, they marched 61 yards to score on a pass from Tate Scott to Christian Sanchez. The conversion, a pass to Eli Mason, was good and Eureka tied the score 8-8. Eureka then recovered the following kickoff to run out the clock on the half.
Both teams turned the ball over on downs to start the third quarter before Humboldt was able to put together another drive when they got the ball at
the Eureka 17 yard line and scored. Again, the conver - sion was good and Humboldt took a 16-8 lead. The lead didn’t last long, though, as Scott hit Wacey Ross for a 53-yard touchdown pass on their next possession. Scott ran the ball in on the con version and tied the score, 16 all.
After Humboldt was again unable to move the ball, Eureka put together what turned out to be the game-winning drive, culminating in another touchdown pass from Scott, this time to Maddox Hughes.
Although the conversion failed, Eureka held a 22-- 16 lead with time running out. The defense, which had been stout all night, especially along the line with JaKolby Robbins and Mason at the ends contain- ing the Humboldt running game, held on Humboldt's final possession and sealed the victory for the Torna - does.
