Rockin’ Robin!

What a great weekend of shooting arrows for our nine Greenwood County archers who qualified for the state contest. The county was well represented as the archers performed well, with three shooting near perfect scores on FITA divisions. Unfortunately, results were still unknown on Monday morning. It is a long wait for those archers (and their parents and superintendents). Archers gathered in Wakarusa at 7 a.m. on Saturday, with the majority of our archers competing in two disciplines. The shoot concluded around 6:30 p.m. and those still in attendance were told results would be delayed due to the incoming weather. Here’s to hoping we have those results early this week. Regardless of the placings, I am extremely proud of all of them for powering through the various obstacles. Congratulations to all our archers, Wylee Boulanger, Savannah Bruno-Pelky, William Davis, Noah Everly-Burtin, Chason Gulick, Fisher Hobbs, Brody Mitchell, Ruger Schouten and Camden Wunderlich. We are proud of you! In life, we make mistakes. Sometimes daily. The question is… will we learn from them and grow or continue on the same path? As a parent, I know my children will make mistakes, it is what kids do. However, I hope I am there to guide them to a successful path, all while allowing them time to make mistakes so they can grow. Bad things can happen anywhere at any time. A bad decision doesn’t make anyone a bad person, simply an individual who allowed poor judgment to win at a weak moment; just as one wrong action does not define an individual or a community as a whole.

I don’t know all the details of what happened on Monday, Sept. 16, nor do I need to. While attending a junior varsity football game in Fredonia, I watched two teams compete, each having the same goal. Despite a rivalry, both teams and fans (in my eyes) displayed great sportsmanship. That was until the game was over. As our Eureka Tornado junior varsity boys returned to their locker room, they found some of their personal items had been rifled through. Amongst the 12 boys (11 players and 1 manager), hundreds of dollars in cash and credit and debit cards were stolen. This is a heartbreaking thing to happen at any age.

Personally, my son didn’t have anything taken; however, a violation still occurred. I’m grateful to the Fredonia Administration and Fredonia Police Department for taking this instance seriously and locating those responsible. All of the items taken were returned just a few days later. I’m also grateful to the parents who talked to their children about this occurrence. This is a life lesson that we should all take time to teach our children about.

Our children can learn greatly from every encounter they have with any opponent. The success they gain will not be from the records they leave school with, but the character they gain from all they encounter along the way.
