Fundraising Underway For Claycomb School Rehabilitation

A fundraising campaign by the Greenwood County Historical Society (GCHS) has begun an effort to relocate and rehabilitate the former Claycomb School.

Sparked by the extensive research that has been conducted and documented on Greenwood County schools, the GCHS began evaluating existing one-room school houses, searching for a structure that could be relocated and restored as a representation of historical education. Fundraising is necessary for the Historical Society to successfully complete this project.

Classes were held in the Claycomb School from 1884-1949. Built with square nails, the Claycomb School still stands at its original location, approximately 12 miles northwest of Eureka. The structure has been donated by the landowner. Relocation is planned for the site west of the Museum on W. 4th Street in Eureka.

This project is being planned for execution in three phases: Phase one – relocation to the new foundation and weatherization; Phase 2 – restoration of the exterior including new siding, roof, door and windows and phase 3 – furnishing and returning the interior to an original state.

Those wishing to donate to the project can mail/ deliver donations to Emprise Bank, 418 N. Main Street, Eureka, KS 67045. Checks should be made payable to the “Claycomb School Project.”

For additional information contact the museum at 620-583-6682.
