Hamilton City Council Opting For New Trash Service

Residents To See Temporary Rate Change The Hamilton City Council convened on Tuesday, Sept. 17 for a special meeting to afford for discussion of trash services.

In hopes of avoiding such a sizeable increase, over 60% for some services, through Waste Connections, council members reviewed numbers quoted by Republic Services. In addition to weekly trash disposal, figures for disposal of roll-off dumpsters during annual cleanup dates were considered for both providers. Members of the council approximated that the city would see a reduction through Republic Services in comparison with the new rates shared by Waste Connections.

Officials spoke to a representative from Republic Services on the phone last Tuesday night and were told that they would start providing service on Nov. 1 if the city were to proceed with their company. 5-year and 3-year contract terms were available and both included a 5% increase each year following the first year of service.

The Republic Services representative was asked to see if it would be feasible for them to begin service on Oct. 1 and she later called back to share that this looked to be feasible.

Following extensive review of numbers, members of the council voted to repeal the vote made during the Aug. 20 meeting to maintain service through Waste Connections. This action passed 4-1, with Councilman Joe Beeman voting opposed.

The vote to adopt the trash proposal from Republic Services for a 5-year term passed in a 3-2 vote, with Beeman voting opposed and Councilman Larry Walford abstaining.

Unanimous approval was received for proceeding with $31.17, a temporary flat rate for all customers, until an audit is received from Republic Trash Services.

Council members voted to repeal Ordinance 364 pertaining to current trash rates and replace it with Ordinance 366 reflecting $31.17 as a temporary flat rate for all customers until the audit is received from Republic Services. This is to take effect Tuesday, Oct. 1.

The next regular meeting of the Hamilton City Council will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 8 at 6 p.m.
