Mayor Stephen Coulter signed a proclamation at the Sept. 9 City Council meeting declaring the week of September 17 – 23, Constitution Week for the city of Eureka. Greenwood County members of the Susannah French Putney Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) were in attendance to witness the signing.

In 1955, DAR petitioned Congress to set aside annually September 17-23 to be dedicated to the observance of Constitution Week. The resolution was adopted by Congress and signed into public law on August 2, 1956, by President Dwight D. Eisenhower.

The aims of the celebration are three-fold. First, citizens responsibilities are emphasized for protecting and defending the Constitution. The second is to inform people that the Constitution is the basis for America’s great heritage and the foundation for our way of life. Thirdly, encouragement is given to study the historical events that led to the framing of the Constitution in September 1787.

In Eureka, during Constitution Week, there will be displays at both the Public Library and the Greenwood County Historical Society Museum. Students in grades 4th-6th will learn about the Preamble and sign a pledge to continue thinking about and learning about the Constitution.
