The Eureka Tornadoes won a hard fought battle against the Fredonia Yellowjackets to improve to 2-0 on the season, last Friday, Sept. 13. The Tornadoes started their home opener featuring Hometown Heroes selected by the Class of 2025. The Tornado football team then claimed a 20-14 victory over the Yellowjackets.
Eureka was first to score, claiming an 8-0 lead early in the second quarter. Fredonia added 8 of their own in the third, but was quickly answered as Eureka returned the kick-off for a touchdown and increased their lead to 14-8. Both teams were tied going into the fourth, with the Tornadoes adding 6 points on a 5-yard touchdown.
The Tornadoes were propelled on offense by senior Kalim Mouer who had 154 yards on the ground and two touchdowns.
The biggest play of the night however, belonged to TJ Mills with a 98 yard kickoff return for a touchdown shifting the momentum back into Eureka’s favor after Fredonia scored on their opening drive to start the second half. Mills finished the night with 120 all purpose yards for the Tornadoes including a big third down catch.
Peyton Hare found more success in the air in week two with 81 passing yards and 54 yards on the ground for a total of 135 yards of offense. The Tornadoes defense once again created turnovers and kept the Tornadoes alive. Noah Rippy caused two fumbles on the night, each time creating a spark for the team. One was recovered by Laken Valentine and the other by Braden Grimmett.
The Tornadoes look to continue their success on the field at Cherryvale this Friday, Sept. 20, as they take on the Chargers. Kick-off is slated for 7 p.m.
