The Eureka Junior High Tornado football team traveled to Caney Valley Thursday to take on the Bullpups in a TVL contest. The Tornadoes played poorly and lost the game 0-38.

Caney received the ball first and drove the field for a touchdown. The conversion failed but it was 6-0 Caney, that quick. Eureka got the ball on their own 41-yard line but actually lost two yards and turned the ball over on downs. Caney followed with another drive that ended in a 16-yard touchdown run to make the score 12-0. Again, the conversion failed and Eureka was unable to move the ball. Caney took the ball on Eureka’s 36 yard line and scored again on a 27-yard touchdown run to make the score 0-20. The conversion was successful and the quarter ended with Caney holding a commanding 22-0 lead.

The second quarter began the way the first quarter ended- Eureka turned the ball over on downs at their own 40-yard line and Caney scored on a 40-yard touchdown run. Caney added to their 28-point lead with another long touchdown run, this time 22 yards, after Eureka was once again unable to move the ball. The half ended with Caney up 32-0.

The second half, with the running clock, saw both teams playing their younger athletes. Caney added one more score on a long run after both teams turned the ball over on downs on their first possession. This made the score 0-38.

Multiple times during the game, Eureka was within inches of making a stop on the Caney ground game, but Caney’s superior speed allowed them to win the game of inches. Caney was consistently able to get around the edge due to this speed. Poor tackling also cost the Tornadoes, as the Bullpup players were able to break a few Tornado attempts. Overall, it was a learning experience for the Tornadoes, who easily breezed by Bluestem last week. They have now faced what is probably the best team in the league and have a much better idea of how to play team defense.

Junior High volleyball A, B and C teams lost to Caney Valley. Eureka’s D team won their match. Scores and stats were unavailable at the time of publication.

The Tornadoes continue their season Thursday at home against Fredonia, a contest which features two evenly-matched teams. Kick-off is slated to begin at 6 p.m. Volleyball action will begin at 4:30 p.m.
