The West Elk Patriots claimed their season opener with a 46-0 win over Argonia/Attica, in less than three quarters of play. The game was called with 10:35 remaining in the third quarter as the Patriots tallied their sixth touchdown of the game.
West Elk earned their first points of the game when Argonia intentionally grounded the ball in the end zone, following pressure by Roman Moreno. In less than four minutes, West Elk would return to the end zone with a 1-yard rush by senior Creyo Koop. The 2 point conversion attempt, also by Koop, was successful and the Patriots led 10-0. The first quarter ended with the same score.
With 9:08 remaining in the second, Patriot Trent Haag connected with Koop for a 16 yard pass for a West Elk touchdown. The 2 point conversion was no good. The Patriots would add three more touchdowns before concluding the half. West Elk scored with a 37-yard pass from Haag to Maddex Moreno, a 24-yard pass from Haag to Koop and a 3-yard run by Koop. The first 2-point conversion attempt by Moreno was successful, as well as the second, a pass from Haag to Moreno. The third was no good. At halftime, the Patriots led 28-0. With 10:35 remaining in the third, Koop ran in for a two-yard touchdown and West Elk was successful on the 2-point conversion with a run by Moreno to clinch the early victory, 46-0.
The Patriots will travel to Oxford this Friday before hosting Udall on Sept. 20. Both kick-offs are slated for 7 p.m.
