County Museum Proceeding with Claycomb School Project

The Aug. 6 meeting of the Greenwood County Historical Society board was called to order by President Mike Pitko. Those present were: Members: John Bills, Kevin Hough, Taylor Hunt, Dana Mills, Kent Olson, Pitko, Gib Rhodes, Rise Russin, Stan Skaer, Jan Stephens, secretary Sheryl Moody, museum director Robin Himes and guest Linda Sobieski.

The minutes of the June 4 board meeting were read and approved.

Olson handed out balance and profit and loss sheets for May and June. There was no action taken on the Treasurer’s Report.

Visitors were reported as follows: 29 in June – from Montana, Florida, Colorado and Kansas; 51 in July – from Oregon, Kansas and Nebraska and 13 individuals from the Virgil Alumni group visited on July 13.

There were no committee reports or bills presented.

Sept. 9 is the Southeast Kansas (SEK) Museum Alliance meeting in Chanute. Himes reported on the program planned for that meeting. No one voiced interest in attending. Old Business

The Museum ordered 15 archival quilt boxes from memorial money for Becky Lindamood. They have not arrived yet. A plaque has been ordered and will be put on the memorial board for Lindamood.

It was reported that the sons of Mills did well cleaning outside displays.

The Claycomb School project was presented by Pitko who handed out a sheet listing the bids for moving and restoring the building and a copy of the flyer created by Olson. The Dale and Debra Dunning family would like to donate the school to the Historical Society. Lengthy discussion was held. Members approved to move forward with the Claycomb School Project. A committee comprised of Hough, Mills and Hunt will meet to brainstorm ideas about fundraising.

New Business

Stephens has contacted Jim Hoy from Emporia about doing a 5th Monday presentation in September. He has agreed and it is scheduled for Sept. 30. She has made an application to the Humanities Council, which was approved, and will fund $300, which will go directly to Mr. Hoy. Stephens was slated to get with Himes and have something put in the paper about this.

Bills will be doing a program on Sept. 7 regarding the construction of Eureka Lake. This program will be done at the Lake.

Hunt gave an update on the new website for the Historical Society. He has separated news and events and it will be searchable. He hopes to have it up by the October meeting.

Pitko invited board members in to see the new display on Climax which is set up in the Ditty Room.

Pitko would like suggestions for people to fill Lindamood’s position on the board brought to the October meeting. A vote will be held at the December meeting.

Stephens asked when the next newsletter will come out. This will be in December.
