The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has announced a $9.3 million investment in two Kansas communities to bolster food supply chains and expand meat processing capabilities.
The funding, allocated through the Meat and Poultry Processing Expansion Program (MPPEP), aims to support local producers, create jobs, and lower food costs for consumers.
“The USDA is committed to the needs of hard-working producers and small businesses that keep rural communities strong,” stated Christy Davis, USDA Kansas Rural Development Director. “The USDA is working to give farmers and ranchers a chance to compete in the marketplace, which will increase local food options and lower costs for Kansas families.”
The investment will be used to establish two new meat processing facilities in the state. Top End LLC, doing business as TEAM Processing in Kanorado, will receive a $2.4 million grant to construct a USDA- inspected beef and hog processing plant.
This facility will serve over 50 local producers, offering services like organic certification and processing of non-traditional livestock. Additionally, it will include a retail space for direct-to-consumer sales.
Real Kansas Meats LLC in Fall River will receive a $6.8 million grant to build a slaughter and fabrication facility, benefiting an estimated 100 producers in Kansas and Missouri. The project is anticipated to create 117 new jobs.
This funding aligns with the USDA's broader strategy to strengthen the food system by promoting local production, fostering competition, and ensuring access to healthy and nutritious food.
By investing in rural infrastructure and supporting producers, the USDA aims to create a more resilient and equitable food system for all Americans.
