A total of 100 golfers competed in a four-person scramble on Saturday, June 29, at Eureka Country Club (ECC), as they participated in the eighth annual Francis Campbell- Lew Marshall-Jerry Handley Memorial Golf Tournament, a fundraiser for the Greenwood County Hospital (GWCH) Foundation.

Campbell, a long-time owner of Campbell Funeral Home, was an avid golfer and enjoyed spending time with friends on the golf course. He served on the GWCH Board of Trustees from 1974-1995 and was a major advocate for GWCH as well as the community of Eureka.

Marshall lived most of his life building a successful farming, cattle and oil business spanning over 60 years. He was a long-time member of the ECC. He was known for his community generosity and willingness to lend a helping hand.

Handley lived most of his life in Eureka, working at City Drug and then becoming the Director of Pharmacy at GWCH. He later opened the Eureka Pharmacy. He was known for his generosity and kindness. He was a lover of golf and was a devoted supporter and friend of the Campbell-Marshall Memorial Golf Tournament and was added to the memorial tournament this year.

During the four-person scramble, winning teams turned in score cards of 8 through 21 under par. In A Flight, the winning team (Jay McKenzie’s team) turned in a final score of 21 under. Second place was won by Thomas Lowe’s team who shot 18 under and third place in A Flight went to Gene Chastain’s team, who shot 17 under.

In B Flight, Bryan Marshall’s team claimed first place honors with 13 under. Amy (Nuessen) King’s and Andrea (Marshall) McGee’s teams both finished 12 under to claim the hardware in B Flight.

In C Flight, Tim Stack’s team claimed top honors with 9 under. Jeff Winn’s and Loren Elson’s teams both finished -8 to round out the winning teams.

Proceeds from the tournament provide funding for scholarships for local students and for the GWCH Foundation, a 501c3 charitable organization which supports the hospital’s effort to provide continuous, compassionate, healthcare close to home.

The ninth annual event is being planned for 2025; however a date hasn’t yet been finalized. For more information, contact GWCH Foundation Director Shannon Sanders at 620-583-7451, ext. 1056 or email [email protected]
