The Susannah French Putney Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) held their monthly meeting at the Butler County Historical Society in El Dorado at 1 p.m. on September 15.
Did you know that the DAR is a service organization of women whose ancestors contributed to the American cause in our country’s struggle for independence? Objectives of Historic Preservation, Education and Patriotism guide the programs, activities and focus of their work. Contact any member for more information about joining. There are experts that can help you trace your ancestry.
The program for the afternoon, “Wreaths Across America,” was presented by new member Deborah Kellogg. The non-profit organization began in 1992 and strives to remember fallen veterans, to honor those who served and to teach our children the value of freedom. On December 16, wreaths will be placed around the country on the graves of our veterans. The wreaths are about remembrance and every aspect of the wreath from its colors to its construction represents the upstanding characteristics of our veterans. Check out the website www. wreathsacrossamerica.org to find out more about this organization.
Two new SFP/DAR members were welcomed: Kellogg and Sue Flowers.
Constitution Week and Citizenship Day commemorate the formation and signing on September 17, 1787, of the Constitution and recognize all who, by coming of age or by naturalization, have become citizens. SFP members placed posters, pamphlets and other educational materials at various locations in El Dorado and Eureka.
Take a moment to contemplate the challenges that our new country faced nearly 250 years ago. Spend some time re-reading the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence to refresh your memory about the marvelous foresight that our founding fathers had as they were creating the foundation of our government.
SFP members in El Dorado held a “Ringing of the Bells” event the afternoon of September 17, to celebrate the signing of The Constitution.
