In 2022, a state law was passed for Kansas students to attend schools outside their districts, if space is available.

A change to that rule came this year, and those wishing to apply for acceptance to other districts must do so during the month of June. Districts will then review applications and notify parents/ guardians if students were accepted between July 1 and 15. Current out-ofdistrict students already enrolled do not need to reapply for acceptance.

The number of students each school accepts varies from district to district; however, districts across the state were to post the capacity available for each grade level to their district web page by May 1. With the capacity limits, students may not be accepted as that specific district could be at their capacity for that grade level. For additional information visit the various district’s websites for specifics.

Additional guidelines to the out-of-district policy include: If there is room for an applicant according to the posted capacity, the student WILL be accepted unless they are deemed a student not in good standing at their current district; If the applicants per grade level are greater than the posted capacity, a lottery drawing will be held to determine which students are accepted; The district is not required to provide transportation for an accepted, non-resident student.
