Jimmie Walker of Alvin, Texas, died on Thursday, May 9, 2024, at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, at the age of 65.

Jimmie Walker of Alvin, Texas, died on Thursday, May 9, 2024, at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, at the age of 65.

He was born February 16, 1959, in Wichita, Kansas, the son of Jim and Patricia Ann (Longbine) Walker. He attended school in Kansas City and Eureka. He was active in school sports and lettered in football, basketball, and track.

In 1978, Jimmie enlisted in the U.S. Navy’s submarine service. For the next seven years, he deployed on nuclear-powered submarines, including the USS Lafayette. These deployments took him on extended missions beneath the Arctic ice pack, patrolling near Russia for up to six months at a time.

In 1978, Jimmie was united in marriage, which later ended in divorce. Prior to his federal role, he accumulated extensive experience as an operating engineer, maintaining Houston’s high-rises for many years. For the past 18 years, he dedicated his skills to managing the mechanical systems of Houston’s Federal buildings as a member of IUE Local 564 Operating Engineers.

Jimmie is survived by his daughter, Jasmine Walker of Yates Center; his mother, Pat Walker of Eureka; sister, Dee Ann and husband, Rich Schneble of Alvin, Texas; foster sister, Linda and husband, Glenn Smith of Donaldson, Ark.; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, Jim; a daughter, Kristy; and his grandparents, Roy and Alice Walker and Albert and Viola Longbine.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, June 22, 2024, at Koup Family Funeral Home in Eureka, with Pastor John Craighead of the Jefferson Street Baptist Church officiating. Cremation has been effected. Inurnment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery in Eureka.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorials be made to the Walker Scholarship or to the Jefferson Street Baptist Church.
