We all feel the strain from the inflation that is impacting our economy on some level. We have had to change our budgets, cut back and even simply say no to things that we have done for years. It isn’t a pleasant experience. Businesses are forced to pass along the added expenses to their consumers or face closure.
In April, we learned that yet another postal increase was coming. We have tried to fight the increase; but, it is something that is coming whether we like it or not. Although, we haven’t officially been told of how the increase will directly impact our weekly edition, the National Newspaper Association shared in April that the increase would show a 51% increase on postage for newspapers in just a threeyear span.
As a business owner, the thought of increasing rates to those that support us is like taking a punch from Mike Tyson. It makes me sick to think about it. But, the option of absorbing yet another increase just can’t happen. As have many small business owners, I too, have foregone paychecks to make sure ends are met. It’s something we do as it is sometimes a softer blow than taking one. However, I can’t keep doing so and have to try and get ahead of the curve.
We cannot absorb more. It simply isn’t an option. I was already toying with the idea of increasing rates, in an effort to “catch up,” and if the proposed rates are approved, we won’t have a choice but to increase the rates... again.
I know the increase may result in readers electing to not renew their subscription; or advertisers choosing another direction; however, that is something outside of our control. My hope is that our readers and advertisers will continue to see the benefit in the services we provide and remain supportive of this small business.
