Celebrate • Honor • Remember

Since 1968, the VFW Post 2712 has honored fallen Veterans with a special Memorial Day service, as well as (when inclement weather doesn’t interfere) creates an Avenue of Flags at Greenwood Cemetery, in Eureka.

Over the years, volunteers have come together to put up flags for the annual holiday, using flags that have been donated in honor of a fallen Veteran to VFW Post 2712.

Due to a lack of volunteers over the years, organizers plan to display a portion of the flags and rotate them annually to where all flags will be on display.

During the special service on Monday of this week, local veteran’s organizations, including John C. Reed Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 2712, the American Legion and the Disabled American Veterans honored their fallen comrades for their heroic deeds.

Several area residents also attended the services to honor and salute members of America’s Armed Forces, past and present.

A total of 15 fallen comrades were recognized at the 2024 Memorial Day service. Those veterans included: Clayton “Dean” Piatt, Raymond “Bud” Denner. Deacon Walter Henry “Terry” Miescher III, JW Marr, Reverend Lloyd Stewart, Milton Daniel Mock, Sr., Larry Paul Lawrence, Willis “Leon” Richardson, Norlan Leon Ferguson, William “Allen” Swisher, Richard Maynard, Clarence “Slim” Pettyjohn, Loren Henry Wools, Jr., Calvin Wayne Johnson and Glendale Norman Rupe.
