Howard City Council

Mayor Richard Clark called the May 6 Howard City Council meeting to order at 7:30 p.m. at the Cox Building with council members Martin Hunter, Shilo Crupper, Gary Harrod and Derek Cookson present. Council member Jerrad Pope was absent. Also present were Clay Hunter, Gas Superintendent and Joanna Hunter, City Clerk. The location was moved to the Cox Building for weather-related concerns; however, the meeting concluded before storm warnings were broadcast.

The board approved the April 15 meeting minutes; payment of city bills totaling $178.50.90; the retention of current city officers: Municipal Judge Kristin Hutchison, City Attorney Marla Ware, Animal Control Officer Clayton Hunter, Fire Chief Danny Signer, Treasurer Sarah Evans and City Clerk Hunter; signing the Kansas Waste Tire Contract for play surface grant; to grant proxy vote for Kansas 811 meeting to the Board; and to donate $100 to West Elk for Girls Basketball team fundraising efforts for camp expenses and gear.

The council discussed the Elk County Community Foundation’s fundraising Match Event for Patterson Family Foundation matching grant and agreed the city would promote the event and encourage people to donate to the fund for City of Howard. Funds donated would be helpful to advance park, playground, lake and other city property improvements.

Other discussion included: Tennis Court resurfacing; Prioritizing future street repairs; Maintenance and repair of Cox Building; Cox flooring tabled until water problems are resolved; Pool prep in May, bathhouse painting in June, and plumbing to be scheduled in the fall; Generator maintenance and repair at city properties; Large dead tree to be removed at lake; Clinic building exterior; Storm drains at Wabash & Randolph; Tree cleanup near lift stations.

The meeting adjourned at 8:17 p.m. The council also met on May 20. Their next scheduled meeting is Monday, June 3 at 7:30 p.m.
