Eureka Recreation Commission Held Short Monthly Meeting

The Eureka Recreation Commission (ERC) held a routine monthly meeting last Wednesday, May 22, where brief updates were shared.

The Eureka Recreation Commission (ERC) held a routine monthly meeting last Wednesday, May 22, where brief updates were shared.

President Austin Evenson shared that a parent had planned to attend to discuss a scheduling concern; however, they were not present to address the commission. Evenson noted that there was a scheduling conflict due to the individual having more than one child participating in different ball leagues this summer. It was noted that two of the individual’s children would be playing in games at the same time and the individual was hoping to amend the schedule to avoid the conflict.

ERC Director Derek Larcom noted that others would experience a conflict if the time was altered. With the schedules already being shared with participants and the community, the ERC didn’t want to amend game times for individual conflicts as it could be an ongoing issue.

It was shared that the summer ball season is underway. There are four t-ball teams, three coach pitch each for boys and girls, two major boys and two pony tail girls teams; as well as one junior team (seventh grade to freshmen) for both boys and girls.

Evenson also shared that the Eureka Aquatic Park was slated to open on Monday of this week (Memorial Day) with a free swim. It was noted that a free swim would also be held on Eureka Days, (Saturday, June 1) from 12 - 3 p.m. A full schedule of events for Eureka Days can be found on page 14.

In discussing equipment for summer ball, the ERC noted that they would like to see participants playing infield wear masks to prevent injuries. Member Isaac Boone shared that a mask stopped a line drive recently from hitting a pitcher in the face. He noted that the ball dented the mask but saved the pitcher from what could have been a serious injury. No decisions were made; however, ERC members recommended participants think about wearing a protective mask when playing infield positions.

Prior the meeting beginning, Director Larcom updated a parent on grade level requirements for participation and noted that the Burlington League sets the guidelines for the junior boys and girls, as they both play in that league.

ERC members Leonard Moore and Brandon Hall were absent from the May meeting.

The ERC meets monthly on the last Wednesday of the month, at the ERC garage in Eureka.
