We had some wicked storms blow through Sunday night. I went out on my front porch Sunday night to latch the screen door and heard a loud crack, looked around and couldn’t see anything as it was dark.

I looked outside at day break and noticed lots of limbs down in our yard. In the backyard, we had a nice big shade tree and a big limb broke off and fell on the chain link fence. I looked out back and several tree limbs are down.

Weirdly, our two trash cans, that stay between the back porch and the exterior wall of a bedroom, got moved out from their hole and were laying down. I don’t know how that happened.

I’ll have to get out later and see if there is much damage around town.

There was a lot of excitement last Friday. At approximately 2:50 a.m. on May 17, Woodson and Wilson County dispatch received multiple 911 calls reporting that a 65 year old woman had fallen into the water while fishing, on the east side of the spillway of the Toronto Lake Dam. Multiple agencies responded to the scene for rescue efforts. At approximately 4 p.m. the woman was found alive one mile into Wilson County on Decatur Road (Coyville Road). She was brought to the incident command center near the Toronto Dam to be checked out by the Woodson County EMS and was transported to a nearby hospital for further evaluation.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers were contacted so they could get someone to close the gates on the dam. Not the kind of excitement we want to see in/around town. Thankfully the lady is going to be okay. Don’t you know she has one heck of a story to tell!

What is “Etymology?”

The weekend was a busy one with graduations, at all levels. Seems like every other grade has graduation. Pre-K, kindergarten, 3rd grade, 6th, 8th, seniors and college!

Answer: Etymology is the study of the origin and history of words, especially their changes in form and meaning. Memorial weekend is this weekend! I thought we had another week! Where is time going? The unofficial kickoff to summer. Be careful as you travel for fun or to cemeteries this week. Lots of traffic is expected this week and weekend. Law enforcement is running a “Click it or ticket” campaign this week and weekend, so be safe, smart and wear your seatbelt.

Is there anything a person can do to get rid of mosquitoes? They are horrendous this year. Bigger and more of them. I’ve been contemplating getting a “bat box” and putting it in the backyard in hopes it will attract some bats.

There’s gotta be something than can be done, short of spraying me and Punky every time we go outside! Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

We should have a new restaurant real soon. Mandy Simon bought Sassy Sister’s and has been busy getting it set up how she wants it. She had Emerald City Foods in Yates Center for awhile, then Sassy Sister’s came up for sale so she bought it and moved her business to Toronto, which is where she lives.
