The Eureka Junior High Tornado football team lost to the Humboldt Cubs 6-50 Thursday night at home. The Tornadoes were never really in the game, as the Cubs returned the opening kick-off for a touchdown. Eureka was never able to move the ball and was also not able to cope with the Cubs’ superior speed when on defense.
Eureka had six possessions in the first half, all of which ended in turnover on downs or an actual turnover. Humboldt had seven possessions and scored touchdowns on all of them with the exception of the last one of the half, in which they also turned the ball over on a fumble caused by eighth grader Killian Harrington and returned for a score by eighth grader Brody Mitchell. The halftime score was 6-42.
The second half, which featured a running clock, resulted in two possessions for each team. As this half was essentially played by younger kids, it resulted in another fumble by Eureka and a touchdown surrendered, making the final score 6-50.
Eureka was unable to corral Humboldt’s runners due to their speed, which led to several big plays resulting in scores. Additionally, despite a valiant effort by Eureka’s seventh grade quarterback Tate Scott, Eureka’s receivers were unable to catch anything in the game. Multiple times Eureka had open receivers but the ball just went off their hands. It also didn’t help the Tornado cause that they were battling significant injuries with their eighth graders. Overall, it was a very disappointing effort by the young Tornadoes.
Eureka plays Galesburg at Erie on Thursday, September 21. Kickoff is at 6 p.m.
