The City of Eureka hosted an informative meeting, April 16, at Memorial Hall regarding the application for the Home Rehabilitation Community Development Block Grant (CDBG). Representatives Megan Unruh and Mike Schwartz with South Central Kansas Economic Development District (SCKEDD) were available to answer questions and provide program details for the 40 plus community members in attendance.

Representatives noted that the grant is income based and the ‘project’ to be completed will be inspected thoroughly before any work can begin. Unruh mentioned the maximum grant award is $300,000, with $25,000 allotted per residence. This grant can assist owners, renters, demolition and relocation if the need were to arise. Examples of eligible rehab activities include, but are not limited to, roof replacement, electrical, plumbing, heating and air, window repair/replacement, siding repair/replacement, minor foundation repair and all other items required to meet minimum Housing Quality Standards. Weatherization services may also be available to some individuals who are being provided services by this CDBG. Local Contractors will be utilized in the rehabilitation projects if they meet certain criteria. Interested contractors are encouraged to contact City Hall for a copy of Contractor Guidelines.

Pre-applications can be picked up/dropped off at Memorial Hall, located at 309 N. Oak, Eureka, no later than May 1. City officials noted that if Eureka were to receive the grant, the ‘target area’ will be decided following review of pre-applications. Once the ‘target area’ is decided and projects are accepted, officials will notify qualifying occupants, owners or renters. The City of Eureka looks forward to working with our community to promote healthy economic growth. For questions regarding this process, please call City Administrator Joel Laws or Assistant City Administrator Karen Simon at 620-5836140 or cityadm@eurekaks. org.
