Madison/Virgil Board Of Education Held Routine Meeting

Routine business was discussed by the Madison/Virgil USD 386 Board of Education last Monday, April 8.

Routine business was discussed by the Madison/Virgil USD 386 Board of Education last Monday, April 8.

The board toured the Ag building to see the progress and hear updates on the process from board member Ty Gaines.

Members of the Madison High School senior class shared their itinerary for their senior trip and asked permission to travel out-ofstate. The board approved the trip to Branson, Mo.

Rob Vicin, with Opaa! Food Management Inc., shared that he has been in and out of the building and believes that improvement has been shown. Discussion was held regarding the quality of food. Vicin assured the board that Opaa is working to improve and asked the board to afford him another month before deciding on the contract.

Vicin noted they hope to continue partnering with the district in the future.

After a short discussion, the board approved for Packer Bolinger to have work release during the second semester of his senior year, next year. Bolinger will need to pass all required courses and get a job in the field that he is working towards.

Mark Adams gave a transportation update. He shared that two of the buses would be coming off their lease on July 1. Discussion was held regarding leasing or purchasing the buses. Adams also noted that he is working to track various items to show expenses/use of buses. No decisions were made.

Maintenance issues were discussed for both buildings, including the condition of the track. With the track being 22 years old, Superintendent Tammy Baird noted that contractors had shared recommendations on the best ways to preserve the track. It was mentioned that this would be a large expense. No decisions were made.

A brief discussion was held regarding the number of fundraisers being held. Board members noted that it would be nice to limit the amount of fundraisers. Board members shared that the community support is there; but, the amount of fundraisers can be overwhelming. During the discussion, Superintendent Baird questioned how the limits would be in place as there are times she doesn’t know of the fundraisers until they have already begun. The board felt the fundraisers should be approved by her and thought limits could be set on fundraisers for classes and organizations during the school year; however, no action was taken.

During the information item discussion, the board also heard updates on transportation, Entegrity. Maintenance, legislative news and KASB renewal. It was noted that Entegrity has been in the sixth-grade classrooms to work on the lights as they continue to flicker. They tested wire connections to ensure they weren’t loose. However, this didn’t fix the issue. Board member Ty Gaines asked about getting an alarm system for the sewer system as it had backed up again. He also wanted to make sure the district had a procedure for cleaning after issues arose. Superintendent Baird shared the KASB contract renewal and noted the value of the service; however, no action was taken. Board member Jannette Luthi shared handouts with fellow board members and urged others to reach out to representatives.

Following a 20-minute executive session for personnel, the board approved the resignation of Andrew Hurlburt, high school boys’ assistant basketball coach. The board approved to hire Brett Dannels as the high school girls’ head basketball coach. The board also approved to move Carla Argabright’s retirement date from June 1 to Jan. 1, 2025.

Administrative reports were given by Principal Amanda Schild and Superintendent Baird.

The board held three executive sessions, totaling 30 minutes, for negotiations. No action was taken.

The meeting adjourned at 10:16 p.m.

Madison/Virgil USD 386 meets on the second Monday of each month. Their next scheduled meeting is Monday, May 13, at 7 p.m.
