In February of 2018, Scott D. Cheever filed a civil suit against the State of Kansas and countless hearings have been held since then.
Most recently, an objection hearing was held on March 29, where expert witness testimony was heard and a bench trial date was set.
With plans of calling more than 20 witnesses, Cheever’s attorneys asked for eight days for the proceedings which was granted.
The bench trail is slated to be held in Greenwood County, beginning on Tuesday, Oct. 15, at 9 a.m A motion hearing is scheduled for Wednesday, May 22, at 10 a.m.
Cheever, who was sentenced in January 2008 for multiple charges, including the murder of Sheriff Matt Samuels, has retained Paul Randle Oller, Julia Susan Spainhour and Brianna Rose Harris as council. The State of Kansas is being represented by Kristafer Ross Ailslieger.
Additional orders from the March 29 objection hearing are expected to be filed this week by Judge Mike Ward.
