April! It’s April. As I write this I am thinking about April Fools’ Day. As kids growing up we were always playing jokes on one another, but April Fools’ Day was the best. Trying to top stunts you pulled last year.

Nothing in particular sticks out in my mind. Faking an injury was not something we did, at least not at home, as one of us was already getting injured doing something anyway.

Ever wonder where April Fools’ Day came from? Well, surprise! The joke’s on you. Nobody seems to know its true origins. What do you know about the origin of the day?

Hello to all in area nursing and assisted living facilities; Hello, also, to all in area hospitals and rehab centers.

We offer our sympathy to all who lost loved ones this past week. May they all rest in peace.

Last Thursday, we were headed east from Country Junction and as I looked ahead I thought out loud, “Wow what’s that near the top of the hill?” We looked again and saw a herd of deer crossing US 54 Highway headed south.

I was busy driving and watching traffic so, Sandy counted the deer and there were seven that we could see. One just stood there and watched us until we drove by then it went on over the fence and was gone.

Saturday was a beautiful day for Easter Egg Hunts. There was a good turnout for the annual egg hunt at the Toronto City Park.

Sunday was a beautiful day also. I watched out the backdoor over at my neighbors, Chad and Vicky Altis’ place as kids were hunting eggs. I had to wonder at one youngsters method: He would pick up an egg and shake it and toss it back on the ground! I can’t help but wonder what was in those rejected eggs!

Answer: For one thing, we do know that April Fools’ Day customs date back to at least Renaissance Europe, but it’s likely the tradition originated long before. Some historians have linked April Fools’ Day to the ancient Roman festival of “Hilaria,” where at the end of March, people would come together to commemorate the resurrection of the god Attis. It was a celebration of renewal in which revelers would dress up in disguises and imitate others.

In 1561, an early, clearcut reference to April Fools’ Day appears in a Flemish poem written by Eduard de Dene. In the poem, a nobleman sends his servant out on a series of wild errands. The servant eventually realizes that these are “fool’s errands” because the date is April 1.

Although we may never know its true origins, April 1 has come to represent a day of joy and comedy as we move out of the darkness of winter and into the spring.

Remember, Toronto Days is coming and if you would like to help out let a Booster Club member know.

We hope everyone had a great Easter weekend. We were very lucky and got a delicious meal brought to us. Thanks to our dear friends Angie and Les Sherman and Sandy DeLucia who delivered it.
