Hughes Named State Champion; Hare And Valentine State Runners-Up

Four Eureka Tornado High School students ventured to Horton High School on Saturday, March 23, for the State Powerlifting meet. Tornado freshman Mason Hughes (114) claimed a state title and Eureka junior Olivia Valentine (132) and sophomore Peyton Hare (225) were both named runner-up in their weight classes.

Four Eureka Tornado High School students ventured to Horton High School on Saturday, March 23, for the State Powerlifting meet. Tornado freshman Mason Hughes (114) claimed a state title and Eureka junior Olivia Valentine (132) and sophomore Peyton Hare (225) were both named runner-up in their weight classes.

Hughes lifted a total of 435 pounds to claim first place honors. He was first in bench with a lift of 125, first in squat at 195, and tied for second in clean with a lift of 115.

Valentine lifted a total of 495 pounds to place second. She was second in bench with a lift of 135, tied for second in squat at 235 and tied for fifth in clean at 125. Forty pounds separated Valentine from the champion, who had a combined total of 535.

Hare lifted a total of 825 pounds, 330 pounds shy of the champion. Hare tied for third in bench with a lift of 225, third in squat with 365 and third in clean at 235.
