Crocus, mosquitoes, wasps, daffodils/jonquils and frogs! What do these things have in common? They are spring items that are out already! I was outside with Punky Sunday and heard frogs making noise to the south of us and I saw a big red wasplike looking creature flying around.

Mosquitoes are out already. I had one in the car the other day and the crocus have been in bloom for over a week now. The daffodils/ jonquils bloomed Monday morning. What is the difference between daffodils and jonquils, anyway?

I was really surprised to hear the frogs, I didn’t think they came out this early. I’ve never really given much thought about frogs until I heard them Sunday evening. When the turkey buzzards are back it will for sure be spring!

Who is Uncle Sam’s female equivalent?

I can’t believe it has been 45 years. I’m not saying it seems like only yesterday when we graduated, but 45 years? That sounds so old!

Answer: It turns out that Uncle Sam had an older sister named Columbia, the country’s first national mascot. Columbia was portrayed as a goddess adorned in patriotic attire, symbolizing the essence of the nation during the 18th to early 20th centuries. In fact, the tune “Hail, Columbia” served as the unofficial national anthem until “The Star-Spangled Banner” replaced it in 1931. Mostly forgotten today, Columbia reigned for two centuries as our national emblem before receding into obscurity. Her most frequent appearance these days is in movie theaters, where she lives on as the logo for Columbia Pictures.
