Tornado freshman Mason Hughes claimed a fourth place finish at the Eureka 3-1A Regional Wrestling tournament last Saturday and punched his first ticket to the state tournament this Thursday-Saturday, in Salina.

Hughes went 2-2 for the day, in the 106-pound class. He will face Tate Blackwill (32-5) of WaKeeney-Trego Community/Quinter in the opening round on Thursday, which begins for 3-1A Boys at 5:15 p.m.

A special state caravan will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 21, the time was to be determined as of press time.

Also representing the Tornadoes at the Eureka Regional were seniors Paiton Gravatt and Trayton Carl Biering and junior Kadin Deshane.

Following are the results for Eureka participants: 106: Mason Hughes (1321) placed 4th. He lost by fall to Silas Good (Caney Valley) 22-7 (Fall 1:00); won a 16-1 tech fall over Gauge Culbertson (Douglass) 6-19 (TF-1.5 3:51); won by fall over Trenton Grimm (Cherryvale) 19-18 (Fall 2:11); and lost by fall to Alec Houchin (Fredonia) 13-7 (Fall 2:21).

113: Paiton Gravatt (0-20) lost by fall to Dagan Turner (Leon-Bluestem) 24-10 (Fall 0:43); and lost by fall to Xavier Shutt (Fredonia) 6-8 (Fall 0:38).

150: Kadin Deshane (1019) lost by fall to Gavin Regier (Marion) 4-16 (Fall 0:22); and lost by fall to Dylan Kirkpatrick (Erie) 14-5 (Fall 2:57).

190: Trayton Carl Biering (6-11) received a bye; won by fall over Ryan Reid (Fredonia) 1-8 (Fall 2:20); lost by fall to Micah Cauthers (Cottonwood Falls-Chase County) 39-5 (Fall 0:41); and lost by fall to Mason Bruggman (Cherryvale) 12-13 (Fall 1:45).
