The Madison City Council approved several appointments during their meeting on Feb. 5. Mayor Paul Dean nominated and the council approved for Mike Helbert, City Attorney and Municipal Judge, Ted Hollenbeak to continue in their positions. After a 10-minute executive session for personnel, officials approved council member Tony Fankhauser as liaison for the city maintenance crews and contractors.

Council members reviewed the bid from Schwab Eaton for 3rd street repairs. Mayor Dean had questions concerning the bid and planned to reach out to Schwab Eaton for clarification. The council also discussed having a Schwab Eaton engineer contact Corey Stutesman, Madison City Water Operator, on the transmission line to the water plant.

In other business, the council got an update on playground equipment that was removed from the elementary school as well as the damaged equipment that was removed from the Madison City Park. The council approved 2024 education programs for the City and Deputy City Clerks.

Fankhauser reported that the old railroad bridge needed to have new barricades placed on it as citizens are using it. He stated it does not have guardrails and was originally opened for bicycle use only. Dean asked City Clerk Alice Grim to price cement blocks or barrier blocks so the bridge can continue to be used by pedestrians and bicyclists.

Council member Evan Casey asked about several houses he felt were in violation of city code. After further discussion, Dean asked Grim to write a notice of violation for 719 W. Lincoln due to weeds and debris that included tires and appliances. In regards to two other addresses mentioned, Dean asked that photos and additional information be provided to Grim before issuing a citation.

Dean asked Grim for an update on roof and facade work on the building connected to the city office. Grim advised she is having trouble contacting the company that is contracted to do the work. Council member Bekah Leach asked for an update on the city sign that is to be installed at the city island. Dean advised that the city is waiting on Coffelt Sign Company, Inc. to get back to them regarding the additional information they requested for the financing.

The next Madison City Council meeting was scheduled for Feb. 20 at 7 p.m.
