The Eureka USD 389 Board of Education held a short routine monthly meeting on Monday, Feb. 12, as the board approved a transportation request, a gym floor bid, audit approval and administrative contracts.

Maintenance Director Derek Larcom presented two bids to the board for gym floor updates. The first bid, from Four State Maintenance Supply, Inc., was in the amount of $35,162.12 and the other was from Great American Hardwood Flooring, Inc. in the amount of $34,550. Larcom shared that Four State would not be available during the summer and recommended the board approve the bid submitted by Great American Hardwood Flooring out of Wichita. The board approved the second bid which included sanding the floor per MFMA recommendations, applying two coats of oil modified sealer and finish, painting game lines and graphics in the main gym; as well as agility lines, pickleball courts, dot agility stations and game lines in the small gym. Larcom noted that this process should be completed every 8-10 years.

Following two executive sessions, totaling 40 minutes (the first for 20 minutes for employment and the second for 20 minutes for administrative contracts), the board approved unanimously to extend the administrative contracts of Marshall Elementary Principal Stacy Coulter and Eureka Junior/Senior High School (EJSHS) Principal Angie Lowe through the 2025-26 school year, as well as approving Superintendent Scott Hoyt’s contract through 202627. The board also approved to extend EJSHS Assistant Principal/Athletic Director Joe Thornburg through the 202526 school year, 4-1, with board member Mike Pitko voting no.

With prom fast approaching, the board approved for the Eureka Safe Night After Prom (SNAP) group to utilize school buses for the annual event. This year, Eureka SNAP will be traveling to Emporia. It was noted that bus drivers have already been secured by the group.

Administrative reports were given by Principal Coulter, Principal Lowe, Assistant Principal Thornburg and Superintendent Hoyt.

The next scheduled meeting for Eureka USD 389 Board of Education is Monday, March 6. The meeting will begin at Marshall Elementary, at 6 p.m. and conclude at the district office.
