To Represent Eureka At 4-1A Girls State

Eureka will be represented by two Lady Tornadoes at the 4-1A State Wrestling tournament as seniors Lyndsey Escareno and Makyla Gore were named Regional Champion and Regional Runner-Up, respectively, at the 4-1A Columbus Regional last Saturday, Feb. 10.

Eureka will be represented by two Lady Tornadoes at the 4-1A State Wrestling tournament as seniors Lyndsey Escareno and Makyla Gore were named Regional Champion and Regional Runner-Up, respectively, at the 4-1A Columbus Regional last Saturday, Feb. 10.

Escareno will be making her fourth state appearance. She placed fourth at the 4-1A State Tournament last year, in the 140-pound weight class, placed fourth during her sophomore year and sixth during her freshman year, both in the 143-pound weight class.

Gore will be making her second state appearance with hopes of claiming her first state medal.

Escareno and Gore will begin their state contest on Thursday, Feb. 22, at 1:30 p.m., at Tony’s Pizza Events Center, in Salina. Escareno will face Marissa Caray (21-11) of McLouth High School in the opening round of the 140-pound weight class. Gore will face Hannah Simmers (22-8) of Effingham-Atchison County Community High School in the opening round in the 170-pound weight class.

Both Escareno and Gore were ranked fifth in Class 4-1A, by the Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association (KWCA) prior to regional action, in their weight classes. In all class, Escareno and Gore were ranked eighth by KWCA. The ninth regular season rankings were expected to be posted by the KWCA on Feb. 13, at kansaswrestling. org. Also representing Eureka at the Columbus Regional were sophomore Harlie Owings and freshman Maela Neill.

A special state send off will be held next Wednesday, Feb. 21. Additional details will be shared in next week’s edition.
