Two Lady Tornadoes will return to the 4-1A State Wrestling tournament next week as they both earned hardware at the Columbus Regional last Saturday, Feb. 10.

Eureka’s Lyndsey Escareno went undefeated at the tournament to earn top honors in the 140-pound weight class. This is her third consecutive Regional Championship and will be her fourth state appearance. She was Regional Runner-Up during her freshman year. Last year at state, she placed fourth in the 140-pound class. She placed fourth during her sophomore year and sixth during her freshman year, both in the 143-pound weight class.

Lady Tornado Makyla Gore will make her second state appearance. She competed at the state contest during her sophomore year. Gore went 3-1 at the regional contest, suffering her only loss to Kiley Dillow of Chanute, who is currently ranked #1 in the state.

Escareno and Gore will begin their state contest on Thursday, Feb. 22, at 1:30 p.m. Escareno will face Marissa Caray (21-11) of McLouth High School in the opening round of the 140-pound weight class. She was ranked fifth in Class 4-1A, by the Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association (KWCA) prior to regional action. In all class, Escareno was ranked eighth.

Gore will face Hannah Simmers (22-8) of Effingham- Atchison County Community High School in the opening round in the 170-pound weight class. Gore was ranked fifth by the KWCA, prior to regional action. In all class, Gore was ranked eighth. The ninth regular season rankings were expected to be posted by the KWCA on Feb. 13, at kansaswrestling. org. Also representing Eureka at the Columbus Regional were sophomore Harlie Owings and freshman Maela Neill.

Following are the results for Eureka participants: 125: Maela Neill (25-16) won by fall over Leah Nation (Mound City-Jayhawk Linn) 12-13 (Fall 0:50); lost by fall to Kayla Wright (Howard-West Elk) 21-7 (Fall 2:54); won by fall over Mylee Miller (Chanute) 1420 (Fall 2:23); and lost by fall to Cara Altis (Columbus) 22-13 (Fall 3:39).

140: Lyndsey Escareno (21-5) placed 1st. She won by fall over Emmaus Bowman (Altamont-Labette County) 6-17 (Fall 0:53); won by fall over Riley Belt (Douglass) 17-15 (Fall 3:00); won by fall over Carly McAtee (Girard) 29-6 (Fall 4:27); and won a 13-4 major decision over Brooklyn Lima (Columbus) 29-4.

170: Makyla Gore (204) placed 2nd. She won by fall over Rebecca Lewis (LaCygne-Prairie View) 15-23 (Fall 1:45); won by fall over Alyssa Bartlett (Paola) 18-14 (Fall 5:24); won by fall over Taylor Plumley (Cherryvale) 32-4 (Fall 3:17); and lost by fall to Kiley Dillow (Chanute) 40-0 (Fall 3:28).

190: Harlie Owings (2420) won by fall over Rylee Woods (Humboldt) 15-13 (Fall 5:32); lost by fall to Ellie Baska (Paola) 23-12 (Fall 4:30); won a 4-0 decision over KayLee Felton (Independence) 17-17; and lost by fall to Ali Simhiser (Fort Scott) 30-10 (Fall 0:57).

The annual event will be held in Salina at Tony’s Pizza Events Center.

Boys Wrestlings

The Eureka Tornadoes boys wrestling team will host 3-1A Wrestling Regionals this Saturday, Feb. 17, with matches beginning at 9 a.m. The top four in each weight class will advance to the boys 3-1A State Wrestling Tournament, also at the Tony’s Pizza Events Center in Salina next Thursday, Feb.

22-Saturday, Feb. 24.
