The West Elk Patriots will be represented at their first girls state wrestling tournament as Lady Patriot senior Kayla Wright etched her name in history and punched her ticket to the 4-1A State Wrestling tournament next week in Salina. This will be Wright’s first state appearance.

The West Elk Patriots will be represented at their first girls state wrestling tournament as Lady Patriot senior Kayla Wright etched her name in history and punched her ticket to the 4-1A State Wrestling tournament next week in Salina. This will be Wright’s first state appearance.

Wright went 3-2 at the 4-1A Columbus Regionals last Saturday to place fourth in the 125-pound weight class.

Wright will face Gabrielle Koppes of Clay Center Community (32-0) for her opening match at state.

The 4-1A girls state tournament will begin at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 22. Day two of wrestling will begin on Friday, Feb. 23 at 10:30 a.m., with the final day of competition beginning on Saturday, Feb. 24 at 9 a.m.

The Lady Patriots were also represented at the Columbus Regional by Marisa Ghramm.

Following are the results for West Elk participants: 115: Marisa Ghramm (5-17) lost by fall to Callie Collins (Cherryvale) 19-17 (Fall 3:25); and lost a 0-3 decision to Sierra Eastman (Burden-Central) 12-18.

125: Kayla Wright (21-7) placed 4th. She won by fall over Anna Danner (Garnett- Anderson County) 3-18 (Fall 0:44); won by fall over Maela Neill (Eureka) 25-16 (Fall 2:54); lost by fall to Hanna Bailey (Girard) 28-3 (Fall 3:04); won by fall over Aubrey Martin (Fort Scott) 23-10 (Fall 2:08); and lost a 3-7 decision in sudden victory to Pyper Lough (Frontenac) 31-14.
