The Susannah French Putney Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) held their monthly meeting at the Butler County Historical Society in El Dorado on Jan. 19.

The group recited the Preamble to the Constitution, DAR Ritual, Pledge of Allegiance, American Creed and sang the Star-Spangled Banner. Chaplain Ann Wimberly shared the devotion.

Newest member, Sheryl Moody, was welcomed and honored by wearing the DAR sash and tiara.

The program for the afternoon was presented by Becky Walters of Walters’ Pumpkin Patch, located on Highway 77 at Burns. Her assistant, Angie Day, was also in attendance. Walters provided a humorous and informative presentation about the pumpkin patch and how it evolved and became the attraction that it is now. She also discussed some of the conservation practices they use on the farm. Door prizes were donated and consisted of products from the Pumpkin Patch gift shop. Door prizes included snack mixes, pumpkin salsa, candles and pumpkin butter.

What began as a hobby for Walters eventually became a business. She began by growing miniature pumpkins for a specialty market, and found she was good at it. She also enjoyed the “quiet time” as she worked in the field behind their house. The city girl had found her niche on her husband’s family farm.

Since the late 1980s, the little patch has grown into the business it is now. Walters and her husband, Carroll, have made contacts in the state and internationally. Check out their website at thewaltersfarm.com to read about their many accomplishments and accolades.

Did you know that US President Benjamin Harrison (1889-1893) was the first president to order the US Flag to be flown over the White House and other government buildings? He did this at the urging of his wife, Caroline Scott Harrison, who was the first President General of the DAR.

The next meeting will be held in El Dorado at the Butler County Historical Society, at 1 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 16. Guests are welcome.

Members in attendance: Teresa Bachman, Carla Cook, Sigrid Denchfield, Patty Goedecke, Janet Green, Loria Howard, Deb Keplar, Sharon McClure, Kathy Morrow, Moody, Martha Riedl, Rise Russin, Nita Whiteman and Ann Wimberly.
