Coble, Koop And Wright Placed At Eureka Invitational

The West Elk wrestling team traveled to Eureka on Saturday, Jan. 20, where four placed in the top four and two claimed hardware.

The West Elk wrestling team traveled to Eureka on Saturday, Jan. 20, where four placed in the top four and two claimed hardware.

In the women’s invitational, Lady Patriot senior Kayla Wright went 2-2 for the day and placed fourth.

Fellow Patriot senior, Evan Coble went 3-1 and placed second. He suffered his only loss to Owen Suttles of Winfield, who is currently ranked #2 in 4A, by the Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association (KWCA). Coble is ranked third in the state in the week 7 class listing of the 3-1A, in the 132-pound weight class, by the KWCA.

West Elk junior Creyo Koop went 4-0 for the day, pinning three of his opponents, in just 32 seconds, and claimed a 9-2 decision over Keon Edwards of Newton, who was ranked second by the Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association last week in the 5A Boys class. Koop also earned his third “Outstanding Wrestler” award, an honor voted on by coaching staff. Koop also claimed the honor at Hesston and Burlington, earlier this season. Koop is currently ranked first by the KWCA in the 165-pound weight class in the 3-1A division.

Following are the individual match results for West Elk participants: 30th Annual Eureka Invitational 132: Evan Coble (24-3) placed 2nd. He won by fall over Kellen Waner (Marion) 4-10 (Fall 0:17); won a 20-5 tech fall over Anakin Brown (Central Burden) 17-10 (TF-1.5 4:38); won by fall over Trevor Beyer (Newton) 12-8 (Fall 1:53); and lost a 1-9 decision to Owen Suttles (Winfield) 28-4.

157: Nolan Denton (915) lost by fall to Kamden Wise (Newton) 21-9 (Fall 2:41); received a bye; and lost by Syler Schuberger (Columbus) 12-13 (Fall 1:42).

165: Creyo Koop (270) placed 1st. He won by fall over Jackson Kleiber (Hillsboro) 6-12 (Fall 0:07); won by fall over Cash Romstedt (Columbus) 3-7 (Fall 0:06); won by fall over Landon Bonjour (Winfield) 13-14 (Fall 0:19); and won a 9-2 decision over Keon Edwards (Newton) 23-7.

175: Landon Wunderlich (10-18) placed 6th. He received a bye; lost by fall to Jaxon Gatton (Winfield) 22-10 (Fall 1:14); won by fall over Andrew Brown (Clearwater) 4-17 (Fall 2:06); won by fall over Jeb Fairchild (Rose Hill) 1-2 (Fall 3:58); and lost by fall to Trenten Akins (Field Kindley) 15-7 (Fall 1:54).

215: Boedy Murphy (1511) won by fall over Gavin Bowman (Douglass) 12-10 (Fall 0:46); lost by fall to Barret Lietz (Rossville) 23-5 (Fall 0:51); won by fall over Logan Rogers (Hillsboro) 10-10 (Fall 1:37); and lost by fall to Radyn Martin (Caney Valley) 15-7 (Fall 1:52).

285: Edward Metcalf (3-14) lost by fall to Logan Buchanan (Newton) 5-1 (Fall 0:13); received a bye; and lost by fall to Aiden Tuggle (Rose Hill) 1-2 (Fall 2:23).

4th Annual Eureka Women’s Invitational 115: Marisa Ghramm (3-12) lost by fall to Zoey Owens (El Dorado) 13-8 (Fall 3:45); received a bye; and lost by fall to Kendal Frakes (Douglass) 18-12 (Fall 2:09).

125: Kayla Wright (164) placed 4th. She won by fall over Maisie Brubacher (Newton) 9-13 (Fall 3:07); won by fall over Maela Neill (Eureka) 1610 (Fall 1:56); lost by fall to Phoenix Probasco (Rose Hill) 11-5 (Fall 4:36); won by fall over Kaylee Gilchrist (El Dorado) 7-4 (Fall 0:54); and lost by fall to Cadence Williamson (Leon-Bluestem) 18-6 (Fall 2:13).

West Elk wrestlers will travel to Fredonia this Saturday, Jan. 27 before competing in Iola in duals against the Mustangs and Osawatomie. The Patriots will then compete at the Three Rivers Tournament at Jayhawk Linn on Feb. 6., before competing in Regional action. The Lady Patriots will battle at post-season action at the 4-1A Columbus Regional on February 10 and the boys will compete at the 3-1A Eureka Regional on February 17.
